It doesn’t matter who the ALP leader is or what they do or what they stand for or who they tread on to get the job or how they treat their staff or how they treat the public service or whether they have any policies or whether they’re a progressive or whether they’re a centrist or whether they follow polls as long as they beat Tony Abbott. Even if they’re exactly the same as Tony Abbott in every way and even look, sound and smell like him it doesn’t matter as long as they beat him. We don’t need to be better than Abbott or look to achieve great things or govern well, we just need to Not Be Abbott.

Exactly this. If your only argument is that ‘he’s the best to beat Abbott’, then what’s even the point of you? If the only reason for you to be in politics is to beat the other guy, or to be in charge for no reason other to be in charge - then you’re the problem.
