Seriously, the Australian government is so fucked; ‘yeah you can have your civil unions, loljks now we want to repeal it’.
Can Lady Gaga be our Prime Minister?
Sigh.
That’s totally what happened. Kk.

Liberal president of the NSW Legislative Council, Don Harwin expressed his “strong support” for efforts to amend the Marriage Act.
Nationals MLC Trevor Khan wrote that the committee should consider people affected by the ban.
“The most compelling are the personal stories of individuals that have been shared with me since entering the NSW Parliament,” Khan wrote.
Former NSW premier Kristina Keneally wrote to the inquiry to back marriage equality despite the views of the Catholic Church.
Tasmanian premier Lara Giddings urged change, as did her coalition partner, Tasmanian Greens leader Nick McKim, on behalf of his party room.
The only submission from a state politician opposing marriage equality published so far has been from NSW Labor MLC Greg Donnelly, who claimed that most Australians do not support marriage equality and urged the inquiry to reject the idea of same-sex marriage “in the strongest terms”.
Clover Moore expressed her support in her capacity as Lord Mayor of Sydney, as did the former federal Australian Democrats leader Brian Greig.
Thank you to Dom for pointing this out to me. This is from a submission to the Australian Senate from Murray McAlpine of the Christian Democrat Party, regarding marriage equality. Not only is this document written in Comic Sans (!!!), but it is full of absurdity. I will now commentate my favourite bits.
[You can access this submission via this page, and view #159 - Clarence Branch]
- A USA Catholic bishop has stated that supporters of homosexual “marriage” fail to understand both the purpose of sex and the nature of human beings.
No, I’m pretty sure the majority of sex is had for pleasure. But of course, a bishop wouldn’t realise that, and to claim knowing the ‘nature of human beings’, you’d pretty much have to be God, fuck.
- It is likely that political endorsement of same sex “marriage” will lead to the escalation of disease and premature death for the homosexual community.
Because that makes perfect sense. “Hey, we can marry now! Yeahhhhhh! Now let’s not do the thing we’ve been campaigning to have for years, sleep around and collect STIs!”
- Escalating health costs occur in part because sexual health education programs have little to no effect on this group- they are irresponsible.
So, the focus in sexual health classes on the possibility of becoming accidentally pregnant prevents teenage pregnancy? Pretty sure the advocacy of condoms in these classes aims to prevent that and STIs…oh wait, you’re against that too.
- The average homosexual has 50- 70 different partners every year.
No source for this one. Were they standing outside a bath house with surveys?
- Even if homosexual “marriages” could last, which they do not, both partners would be dead within a couple of decades.
No point marrying anyway! We’re already ridden with disease so we’re going to die.
- 15-40% of child molestation involves homosexuality…In their magazines, gays admit that one of their objectives in doing this is to increase the number of homosexuals.
This is baffling. 15-40%. Well done on being specific. So, that means that at least 60% of child molestation involves heterosexuals? Yet they can marry…strange…and it looks like our recruiting days are over! They’ve finally cracked how homosexuals come into existence, just some casual molestation, you know. Our master plan is actually to recruit enough to build an army and invade the world.
- The same arguments used to justify same sex “marriages” can be fully used to justify polygamy, incest, group sex and so on.
Totally. In fact, Canada, The Netherlands, Norway and South Africa are all planning such legislation now. I personally plan to move to Canada so I can be polygamously married to some moose.
- International trend against same sex “marriages”…Same sex “marriage” laws are now being overturned democratically.
The article references only American cases. That is not ‘internationally’. That is an example of one country that keeps mistaking its democracy for theocracy.
And the winner for bizarreness goes to…”Grammatical Implication”:
- Good grammar enables us to understand that the words “same” and “opposite” do not mean the same thing. The reality is the meanings of these two words “same” and “opposite” are so far apart, that no one would suggest otherwise…An understanding of “same” and “different,” are two of the basic cognitive skills that are tested and measured in the standard Australian IQ tests. This fact demonstrates that not all discrimination is negative. Rather the ability to recognise difference is essential.
Just, fuck. What the fuck are they trying to say? That the implication of labelling a homosexual union a “marriage” will be the decay of intelligence? I really need to say fuck a few more times here. Fuck, Fuck, fuck. This is supposed to be the Christian political force in Australia. Well done at proving yourself, once again, more fucking stupid than you look - the Comic Sans was an appropriate touch.
So there you have it. I encourage you to read the entire thing. It’s likely you’ll be dumbfounded, likely you’ll laugh at some of the wild generalisations and information that seems to come from no-where [Homosexual Fact Sheet?]. Enjoy.
When I was in year 5, I saw my teacher, Miss Hansford in the supermarket carpark. I was befuddled. She buys groceries? She DRIVES a CAR? She wears JEANS? It was so disconcerting to see her out of her natural habitat. I didn’t like it one bit.
I feel similarly discombobulated when I get a glimpse at the real life of politicians. The idea of them sitting around a dinner table with their family. Helping the kids with homework. Vacuuming.….It makes it harder to go back to seeing them as a two-dimensional talking head.
Tony Abbott is one of the clearest characters in politics. There’s no confusion about who he is or what he stands for. He’s the pugilistic conservative; brutally effective in destroying the government. He is traditional, religious and pragmatic.
Margie Abbott and the three lovely Abbott daughters are regulars at his side - part of the Tony package.
Christine Forster is Tony Abbott’s little sister. She is gay.
It turns “brand Abbott” upside down. The man who strongly stands against gay marriage, has a little sister who is living with a woman she’d very much, like to marry.
When Bob Katter’s gay brother Carl took his story to the media, it was an airing of very dirty family laundry. Carl’s rage at his brother’s condemnation of gay marriage has caused a very public split between the brothers.
The Abbott family has acted very differently. From what we know of the Opposition Leader, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he had (like so many families do) turned his back on his sister. But the would-be Priest has embraced his sister’s lifestyle. He loves her, no matter what.
In an interview over the weekend, Tony Abbott spoke about what happened when Christine decided to leave her husband for a woman.
“These things happen,” said Abbott. “The marriage ended. For Chris it was replaced by something else that is marvellous. She has regrets but she did something brave, authentic, something she felt had to be done. I can respect that even if I can’t in every sense understand it … I’ve come to the view over the years that the only side you can take is that which tries to maintain relationships. Getting judgmental in ways which damage relationships does no one any good.”
His sister Christine says she loves her brother and that he showed her sympathy and acceptance when she came out to him. He’s been, by all accounts, a really good brother.
“My brother and I have always had a strong relationship and he respects and supports me and my lifestyle choices,” she said.
“Tony, Margie and their daughters have warmly welcomed Virginia into their family.”
But she hasn’t been able to change his mind on the issue of gay marriage; it’s been a topic of heated conversation between them. Christine says she’ll keep working on him, and Tony says he’s not likely to change his mind. They are a (fairly) regular brother and sister. They’re allowed to disagree.
“Chris and I have always got on very well. She’s a very level-headed, down-to-earth, pretty tough-minded individual. She’s more politically centrist than I am but she’s no bleeding heart lefty either. Her views are well thought through, well formed, balanced and decent. Recently we’ve argued over gay marriage. Not a nasty argument - more of a discussion than an argument. I think she understands my position,” he said.
The Coalition made a commitment before the last election that they wouldn’t make any changes to the marriage laws. After months and months of calling Gillard a liar, it’d be politically perilous for Tony Abbott to go back on his word on this. The cries of hypocrisy would be deafening.
Both parties are too scared of the backlash from “middle Australia” to move forward on same-sex marriage… Labor has allowed a conscience vote (meaning they won’t force their member to vote along party lines) but they won’t have the numbers to change anything. The Coalition always has the freedom to vote according to their conscience, but they too wouldn’t have enough members to make a difference – but it’s not up to the Coalition right now anyway.
When questioned on the issue in the past Tony Abbott has always picked his words carefully to show that he isn’t against gay people, but, as a staunch Catholic, he can’t agree that “marriage” could be defined any other way than a union between a man and a woman.
When asked about the issue during the 2010 election, he said, “I hope I would always find it in my heart to treat people the way everyone should be treated - with dignity and respect. And I think people who know me well, who are gay, would be only too happy to testify to that.”
In hindsight, that statement is a little more poignant.
In his book, Battlelines, Tony Abbott wrote: “Politicians are volunteers. They choose their life. Families are conscripts. Exposing your family to public notice is part of the inescapable downside of being in public life.”
There must have been a number of times when it would’ve been on the tip of his tongue. When people were laughing at the suggestions that Parliament’s tough guy understood the hardships faced by the gay community. When people told him he needed to get out of the Church and get to know some gay people. When people told him he was shut off from the real world and stuck in the past.
It would have been terribly easy for him to say, “You don’t know everything about me. I do know what I’m talking about. My sister is gay.”
But he never did. He kept her confidence to protect her. Like any other big brother would do.
Whether Campbell Newman actually supports same-sex marriage is irrelevant. Section 51 (xxi) of the Constitution gives the Federal Parliament exclusive power over marriage. So frankly, I don’t care about the homophobic views of QLD’s politicians, because unless they plan on seceding, it doesn’t matter.
Civil Unions maybe matter. Which I don’t see the reason for massive outcry against, since it’s not even marriage - which is what the big conservatives are against.
But yeah, this.
The Opposition, Democrats and Greens have all made public statements about the Bill.
On 28 May 2004 Green MP, Michael Organ, wrote to members of the ALP asking them to oppose the Bill.(51)
Australian Democrats spokesperson on law and justice, Senator Brian Greig has called for a Senate inquiry into the Bill. Senator Greig said:
The Howard Government’s plans to block marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples wrongly sends the message that same-sex couples are not socially valid, significantly caring or worthy of legal protections. …
The proposed ban on overseas adoptions sends the message that gay and lesbian couples are not capable of offering a caring, stable family environment in which to raise children. This is absolutely appalling. (52)
In a press release issued on 1 June 2004, the ALP’s Shadow Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon MP, said:
The Labor Party will not oppose the PM’s measures to confirm in the Marriage Act the common law understanding that marriage is “a union between a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others”. Consistent with this, Labor will also not oppose a prohibition on recognising foreign same sex marriages.
While Labor questions the PM’s motives and reasons for bringing on this issue for debate now, and questions whether it is necessary – Labor does not oppose these parts of the Bill which merely confirm existing law and our previous commitments to keeping marriage as a heterosexual institution.
However Labor does not support the Government’s attempts to interfere in adoption issues.
Ms Roxon also said the ALP would seek to refer the Bill to a Senate Committee.(53)
Greens Senator, Bob Brown, says that the Greens will oppose the Bill and also seek to refer it to a Senate Committee.(54)
A sceptic would wonder whether Labor wants this bill to fail? If it doesn’t succeed because Abbott refuses to allow a conscience vote for his party, then Labor can blame the Liberals, shifting the odium of the failure to the Tories and away from its own tensions on this issue.
The mantra would be: ”Labor tried to change the law but the Liberals blocked it. We had a conscience vote and the Liberals didn’t. Labor good, Liberal bad.”
It’s hard sometimes not to feel this is the strategy: to set up the bill to fail but to claim to have tried, giving the appearance of supporting gay marriage but not actually changing the law.
The evidence for that seemed to be in the recent haste of Labor strategists to introduce the bill in February and begin debate shortly afterwards, knowing full well the numbers are not there for it to succeed. But could the numbers be there? Are the Liberals a completely lost cause?
Not according to AME, which has been lobbying MPs on this issue for several years, and that claims there may be enough Coalition MPs who privately support equality to make up the numbers, assuming a conscience vote were permitted by Abbott. AME believes that with a few more months up its sleeve it has a chance of swinging it.

Have you seen this?! So far this weekend over 800,000 people have shared our latest video, Love Story, making it the fastest trending video in the world on YouTube right now!
www.getup.org.au/lovestory
We don’t want to spoil the twist… but this video is about ending…Yes, but it’s preaching to the choir, shouting at the moon and ultimately pointless.
Well, unless the point is to get people to donate to GetUp!, which is an organisation devoted to fundraising for itself so it can make more ads to raise more funds to make more ads etc. etc.
Want same-sex marriage?
Vote for it.
I just think that it is a very beautiful video. It has an interesting emotional reach, and quite honestly, if it does get the funds to be put onto television, then it may strike a few swinging voters which may have the knock on effect of creating change in the ALP, or even just in everyday perception. Its worth a shot.

We don’t want to spoil the twist… but this video is about ending discrimination, and there’s just one week left until a crucial decision that could help do that at the ALP National Conference.
So we’ve adapted this smash-hit online video for TV, and if we can raise enough donations together, we’ll buy national prime-time spots to put it on air this week.
So this week, share the butterflies of a first meeting. Share the pain of loss, and the joy of building a life together. Then share the video: flood your friends Facebook walls, email and tweet at them, or chip in for national TV ads, and let’s share this modern love story.
